I had my first sprint triathlon of the summer on key biscayne yesterday. i was sportin' some new stretchy, dare i say stylish, tri shorts and oddly enough was a bundle of nerves. the reason -- i haven't done a sprint since my first ever triathlon last august -- i've been doing the longer distance and working on my pacing/endurance versus speed. but all in all i am pleased with my performance. i finished in 1:08:54. i came in 13th out of 33 (for my age group).
I did the 1/4 mile swim in 6:23. it's actually a great time, but i was a bit disappointed as i was literally strangled by a lifeguard as i rounded a buoy and lost my place in the lead pack and a good :10-:15. (for some odd reason there was a lifeguard IN the water, IN the swim path and he had a lifeguard ring with a rope that was attached to another lifeguard on a surfboard about 5 ft away. the rope caught my neck and it (obviously) stopped me. it was so strange.)

on to the 10 mile bike ride. i've been struggling a bit on my bike lately. my legs keep "blowing up" so i wanted to make sure i didn't kill myself during the ride. i held back a bit but still finished in 32:42.
which leads me to the run. the dreaded run. you all know i hate the run. BUT, i had my best run ever in a triathlon. i finished in 27:01. i FINALLY broke my 9 minute/mile barrier. finally. and the best part, i had a little more in me. i know i could have pushed harder.

it was the first race of the trilogy -- the benchmark for the rest of the sprints this summer. (at least, i hope.) :)
also, HUGE shout out to "coach" Tony (ha ha)
(of Tony REALLY can) for a RI-diculous time! yes i made that name up for his blog, you'll understand what i mean if you read it. and then there's Aileen (pictured with me above) for her best swim ever and overall awesome time! oh, and dawn from work who hasn't done this in 4 years and soldiered through the duathlon despite a few bike hiccups. :)
